Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Bellamy's Boston

Upon waking up, he finds himself in the house of a Dr. Leete and his family, and after gazing at the city of Boston from a bird's-eye view, Julian West says, "If you had told me. . . that a thousand years instead of a hundred had elapsed since i last looked on this city, i should now believe you." The Utopic Boston society is so radically different that Mr. West truly cannot believe the relatively short amount of time which had passed.
It is important to note that all revelations of Bellamy's utopia come from the viewpoint of Mr. Julian West, the individual, and his quick immersion and comfort in the new, extremely foreign society speaks to its utopic nature. Even though he is from a completely different time he becomes well-acclimated and freely accepted in the futuristic Boston, hinting at its inherent good nature from the beginning.
