Exploratory Reflection Essay

 

In my exploratory essay, I decided to talk about the cheerleader from Georgia Tech Raianna Brown and the controversy brought out by her actions in the sports community and social media. The picture taken of Raianna was her kneeling on the floor during the national anthem with her face not fully exposed to the camera alongside of her standing are two of her fellow cheerleaders showing almost all of them except for their faces, and the rest of the background is out of focus.

            At first glance, I thought nothing much of the picture not understanding what was so important visually and politically. Later I realized that the picture contains multiple major aspects regarding social status, gender, and race. In this society as a colored female, her action can play a great role in catching the public eye, because of this she can express points and ideologies through nonverbal expressions. Raianna posted this picture on her social media, but movement itself wasn’t her owns or so I thought at first.

            My overall experience writing this essay analyzing the picture helped me realize how much actions can have different meanings politically even if the action seems to have no meaning at first glance. Political statements can have different meaning depending on who is making the statement if someone from a different race or ethnicity did the same actions Raianna did the feedback from the public would be different especially if this individual had very high political standings.
