Long before we were greeted with the welcome sign from the Sunshine Canyon Landfill, we received welcoming wafts of air from the dump site. The same american flag being raised on the green, sweet-smelling grass at UCLA was proudly waving over the entry sign to the landfill. The smell emanating was not nearly as overwhelming as I expected. This was the first indicator that my expectations would be vastly undermined by our visit.
