It is compulsory for all first years to participate. Ienkmelodienk takes place at the end of orientation week, which is the first week at the residence for the new first years. Ienk consists of lots of formation moves and throws. It is really a vast amount of fun and sets the tone for the rest of the year. Practice time is limited, thus it is very important to make use of the limited practice hours wisely. This is why new first years learn their lyrics before they arrive as we have no time to practice this. The music for Ienk is played by a band consisting of first years too. This is generally a hurdle as it is difficult to get the performance synchronized with the band. Strong energy and motivation are all it takes to perform a great Ienk! The performances take place over one day at the amphitheater on Hatfield campus. Ienkmelodienk is the biggest first year activity at the University of Pretoria.
