Contradictions

This scene undoubtedly made audiences in 1935 as uncomfortable as Sylvia appears in the film. Maude clearly finds the young teenage "boy" attractive. Not surprisingly, everyone is attracted to the highly sexual androgynous Hepburn. But, the clear contradiction of seeing two women on the screen engaged in flirtation would be uncomfortable for a heterosexual female audience.
