This article was not a main source for me. I primarily used this source as a means of getting background information about Reeves. This article in particular focused her newest album release called Beautiful Life. The article was helpful in that it had a lot of first-hand quotes from Reeves, which though I didn’t use many in the biography, it did provide me with a better understand of Reeves’ life.

This is an article on Rebecca Kilgore’s life. It was a very insightful article, as I had trouble finding biographies and personal accounts of Kilgore’s life. This article provided great insights on her days as a musician in Portland and interestingly, all the information in this article coupled well with and is in synched with the information that I received from the Jazz Archive Interview. Not everything that we read is reliable but when information in this article matched up with first-hand accounts from Kilgore herself, I knew that this article was legitimate. Much of the information I got from this article is used in her biography in the project as well as in the geo-location mapping of her life.

This is an article on Dianne Reeves' life. Originally I had trouble finding an all inclusive biography and substantive information on Reeves’ life. When I came across this page I was very excited, especially because a lot of the information on this page seemed to be very accurate and in synched with the information I received from Reeves’ herself in her Jazz Archive Interview. The article includes a lot of information from her childhood to her adult life as a successful musician. This article gave a great overview of Reeves’ life and, as such, I used the information in this article to write the biography as well as to use as information in the geo-location mapping of her life.

Gerard, Charley. Jazz in Black & White: Race, Culture, and Identity in the Jazz Community. Westport, CT: Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 1998.

A lot of the information used from this book was for background purposes. In particular, I used this source as a means to get a better understanding of the development of race distinctions found in jazz. I used this information for the introduction page. It was used to gain a better understand of the rac

Placksin, Sally. American Women in Jazz: 1900 to the Present, Their Words, Lives, and Music. United States: Wideview Books, 1982.

This was the most useful source I found. I found this book in the library and used it for a majority of my research. To publish this book, Placksin interviewed over 50 women. Though many of the women that she interviewed were not women that I was specifically researching (Dianne Reeves and Rebecca Kilgore), the insights other artists provided was very helpful. Furthermore, Placksin’s introduction was incredibly helpful. She provides great information on the history of women in jazz from jazz’s primitive stages to the present.
