Drummers:
Sherrie Maricle and Terri Lyne Carrington
Sherrie Maricle
Sherrie Maricle is an American jazz drummer. Her studies took her through New York University while she continued her passion and exploration of drumming. Sherrie attained her Masters of the Arts as well her Ph.D in jazz from New York University. Her passion in drumming allowed her to learn from well acclimated percussionists such as Mel Lewis and Jeff Hamilton. During the 1980s, Sherrie worked with bands led by other famous jazz musicians. She is the leader of her big band DIVA.
Sherrie Maricle likes to explain that her drum set embodies her career as she coordinates with four limbs. As she plays with both legs and arms she is juggling playing her whole drum kit as a metaphor of her chasing success as a jazz artist, composer, music director, and teacher. As the drummer, she is the leader of three groups: the big band DIVA, quintet FIVE PLAY, and The DIVA Jazz Trio. Sherrie has performed at many of the most renowned venues across the globe with her three musical groups. For instance, DIVA, which is arguably her most popular group, has been responsible for the soundtrack for NBC’s 2014 Macy’s Fireworks Spectacular. DIVA has also performed on the Sunday Morning Show with Charles Osgood on CBS. Sherrie has also performed with DIVA on a live broadcast of the 25th Anniversary of the Kennedy Center, and in 2012 DIVA was featured in an award winning film The Girls in the Band. In addition, Sherrie has performed with the DIVA Jazz trio on the popular NPR show Piano Jazz. (Sherrie Maricle, drummerworld.com)
Sherrie created and currently runs the Musical Magic hospital for the Ronald McDonald House in New York. Even though she is 52 years old, she continues her career as a drummer by immersing herself in several forms of work. For instance, currently Sherrie runs a privately owned drums and percussion studio and she also works as a clinician for leading drumming musical companies such as Yamaha, Sabian, Aquarian, and Vic Firth. Aside from Sherrie’s three groups she leads, she is a dedicated musician who takes work as she finds it. Sherrie currently works as a freelance musician recording and playing live with several other musical groups, such as the New Jersey Symphony, countless Broadway shows, and various other groups. Sherrie Maricle is one of the very few drummers who helped morph jazz drumming into what it is perceived today in the 21st Century. (Sherrie Maricle, divajazz.com)
