Overcoming' Race with Jazz

Introduction

Abstract

The History of Jazz is one of inclusion and self-expression. Originating as an outlet of self expression for underrepresented African Americans and growing into a national phenomena. The inclusion of Jazz as both an artform and an area of interest in American education has allowed Jazz musicians to overcome barriers of race, but the battle of racial equality in our society(‘s zeitgeist) is ongoing. Despite our research, we believe it is the way we learn and teach (use) jazz, rather than the message of Jazz as a social construct itself, that should be scrutinized (we want more innovation in jazz education to supplement). Break down social construct to accept a common identity. What do you learn in jazz class. Jazz classrooms are not diverse enough. Education hasn’t helped, Jazz has helped. Awareness is what we are trying to do with this project, and that is why Jazz, and digital humanities, can help nurture inclusion. Jazz helps teach us how to hear new sounds.
