INTL 190 - Haiti in a Transnational Context

Comparing Both Country Natural Disaster Record

Chile became one of the countries that experienced multiple earthquakes in the past century. One of the Chile earthquakes that happened in the 1960s became one of the biggest earthquakes that were recorded in history with a magnitude of 9.5 Mw. This earthquake killed 1,655 people. According to Wikipedia, from 1900 until the present, Chile had experienced 91 earthquakes, however not all the earthquakes were on a major scale. Most of the epicenter of the earthquakes was miles away from civilization. Many geological explanations explain the reason why Chile had this many earthquakes at that time. In the article by “Slate”, the author Brian palmer explains the reason behind this natural event. One of the reasons was the Nazca plate, a tectonic plate that moves 6.6 cm per year (Palmer). The Nazca plate often collides with the South American tectonic plate that is located on the Chilean coast. The pressure between these two plates created the earthquake.

The earthquake that happened also changed the Chilean landscape. The data collected also explained that the 2016 earthquake is then strained from the earthquake that happened 56 years ago. In contrast with Chile, Haiti doesn't experience earthquakes as often as Chile, however, almost all the earthquakes lead to national scale casualties. According to Wikipedia, in the past 100 years, Haiti experienced 6 earthquakes, with 2 earthquakes giving major casualties to the country. The first major earthquake was the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and the other major earthquake was the 2021 earthquake. In the article by “NPR" the author Jocelyn Diaz explains the reason why the Haiti earthquake was so catastrophic. One of the main reasons is that Haiti is located in a fault line between two huge tectonic plates which are the North American Plate and the Caribbean plate (Diaz). The other reason and what caused the 2010 earthquake and 2021 earthquake was the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system.

In 2012, scientists were claiming that the 2010 Haitian earthquake made the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system seismically active again, and Haitian expected to face another earthquake in the future. As we can see the recent earthquake become proof that those claims were right. All the Haitian earthquake was not as big as the Chilean earthquake from the Richter’s scale standpoint, however, the casualties that occurred in Haiti was greater because the epicenter of the earthquake was only 25 km away from the capital city, that’s the reason why the impact of the earthquake was so devastating and it took hundred thousands of Haitian lives.
