Intermission: COVID-19's Effect on Theatre

Anonymous

What parts of the industry are you involved in?

I am involved in the theatre industry in the Design and Technical Production area.

Are you currently involved in any theatrical or artistic projects?

I am currently working with students creating an Immersive Theatre Piece—for this, there are 8 small productions that each range from 5 to 7 minutes. These pieces are located in traditional theatre spaces as well as in found spaces. All of the productions have full technical support in all of the design areas—scenic, costume, lighting, and sound.

How has the COVID-19 epidemic personally affected your artistic opportunities?

All of the various projects I was scheduled to work on were canceled. I am still waiting to hear if any of these will be restarted. I have continued to create my own personal art and have found myself being productive finishing projects that were started and never finished. I have also spent more time exploring other artistic outlets for myself.

What do you think is in store for the industry? Will it be the same post-COVID?

I do not know what the future holds for the industry although I believe that it will come back, but with a more thoughtful approach in all areas.  Theatre has been around for a very long time and will continue to endure. I think that all areas will be more mindful of the workload, safety protocols, etc.

What words of advice or solidarity do you have for other artists in the theatre industry?

I can only say that we have to take it day to day. I believe that we will need to just focus on the work and do it for the joy of doing it.
