He was also a decoy collector and collaborated with Joel Barber to present exhibitions of wildfowl decoys. Rather than simply sticking to the hollow design common in Straford, CT, Wheeler made decoys in a range of styles. Shelburne Museum's collection includes 36 works made by Wheeler, including examples of solid, hollow, cork, and balsa decoys as well as a skiff, decorative carvings, and paintings. Bothworks depicted here are examples of hollow constructed carved wooden decoys made by Wheeler.
