This case features documents and objects pertaining to the OM Record Label and the KPFA tape collection. It also includes some administrative documents such as artist testimonials recounting their experience as Other Minds resident artists, examples of press coverage, and an issue of OM's newsletter, Mindreader.
The top shelf displays early administrative documents of the organization: a contract with “California College of Performing Arts” crossed out and replaced with “Other Minds” demonstrating a change in the name and shift in the organization; a mock up of potential OM logos; letters of support from Lou Harrison and Pamela Z recounting their positive experiences at the Djerassi Artist Residency and performing at Other Minds; documents from Carl Stone’s time as visiting Artistic Director in 2000; an example of the Mind Reader, OM’s short-lived print newsletter; and annotated staff meeting notes.
As an organization, especially under Amirkhanian’s leadership, Other Minds is dedicated to preserving and distributing recordings and interviews associated with experimental and American music. Displayed on the middle and bottom shelves are documents from OM tape preservation efforts in association with Bay Area radio station KPFA, for which Amirkhanian served as Music Director from 1969 until 1992. Documentation from the Other Minds record label, launched in 1999, is also featured.
