"Honey, Hush!": Toward A Diasporic Analysis of Black Women’s Literary Humor

Fight the Power... (2012)

Bailey, Constance. "Fight the Power: African American Humor as a Discourse of Resistance." Western Journal of Black Studies, vol. 36, no. 4, 2012.

Bailey uses psychoanalytic approach to African American humor, arguing that the appropriation and trivialization of popular Black stand-up comics arises out of a mainstream desire to denigrate the socio-political commentary that underlies African American humor. The article posits that psychoanalysis helps illuminate the fetishistic consumption of blackness and the challenge to Black comedians who attempt to interrogate  hegemonic definitions of blackness.
