What continuities exist between the Romanticist and Hegelian interest in art as a means of self-understanding and the motivations of Expressionist and Post-Expressionist artists?
The expressionists, while using drastically different techniques, also hint at a deeper meaning being expressed in their work. Whether it is their non-realistic use of color, their use of abstract shapes, or their distorted representation of perception and perspective, they hint at the audience to think more of the meaning underlying the work, than the work itself.
