Modern and Contemporary African Art: A Collaborative Vanderbilt Student Research Project

1990s

The 1990s brought about major changes, particularly in South Africa as the Apartheid system began to come apart. Many artists addressed this atmosphere in their works, expressing personal relationships to the political changes occurring and the atrocities that had been committed. Additionally in London, a group of artists with African ties formed the Young British Artists (YBAs). This group began in the late 1980s and exhibited through to the 1990s.
