Ghost Metropolis: Los Angeles from Clovis to Nixon

Long Cold War

The period name "Long Cold War" is coined here. By it the author designates the years 1917-1991 as an extended Cold War beginning with Russian Revolution and Woodrow Wilson's and leadership of the international Anti-communist forces. The First Red Scare, 1918-21, headed by US Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer and the founder of the F.B.I., J. Edgar Hoover, was only the first of many episodes of an America preoccupied throughout the 20th century with the mortal threat of communism. Certainly, the Cold War as traditionally defined, beginning in 1947 and ending during the George H.W. Bush administration, si a coherent period, and should be retained to speak about a new phase of anti-communism in America, one dominated by the National Security State. --PJE
