Ghost Metropolis: Los Angeles from Clovis to Nixon

Haka Arakau (originally Hishituru Tori) played by Sessue Hayakawa

This surviving 1918 print, distributed during the Great War, in which Japan and the USA were allies, changed the original character's Japanese name Hishituru Tori to a Burmese identity. But the film's original portrayal of Japanese during an anti-Japanese movement in California must be understood as the intent of Lasky and DeMille. They were intentionally playing with fire.
