Jancis Robinson, OBE, MW and Hugh Johnson, OBE
Hugh Johnson is a British wine writer and expert on wine. As the world’s best-selling wine writer, he has been writing about wine since 1960 and has published numerous books on the topic starting with Wine in 1966.The World Atlas of Wine written by Johnson in 1971, and then in collaboration with Jancis Robinson starting in 2003, is regarded as the first genuine attempt to map the world’s wine regions. Jancis Robinson is also a British wine writer, wine critic, and journalist. At the time of this exhibition (2017), she has written 29 books and hundreds of articles about wine. Robinson is the first person outside of the wine trade to earn the title Master of Wine and has been serving as Member of the Royal Household Wine Committee advising on the Queen's cellar since 2004.
The Hugh Johnson Archives in Archives and Special Collections at UC Davis Library contain handwritten and typescript manuscripts, research files, correspondence related to several of his books on wine, drafts to many of his articles, correspondence and notes on his publications, and a set of press clippings and scrapbooks documenting Johnson’s early work.
Jancis Robinson Papers on Wine Writing include tasting notes from commercial and trade tastings, wine festivals, and informal events.
The collection also includes copies of Robinson's articles, articles about Robinson and her work, and publications edited by Robinson. Her television work is documented through press clippings and videocassettes. Photographs in the collection feature publicity photographs, photographs from award events and tastings, and photographs taken during the filming of television programs.
