Media Project
For this project, I wanted to explore a different type of media then what we typically deal with in class. It was important for me to create the best piece of media that I possibly could. Since music is something that I know how to create, I decided to take the themes of internationality and create a piece of media through pastiche, or what is known in the music world as "sampling". The idea of sampling is something we have seen within the movies we have watched in class. Examples are this are different camera techniques used by different movies, and different types of kung fu. I wanted to translate the similarities I noticed between the movies to music. Music was the only means that I could use to create something that would be complex enough to intrigue the viewer of the project. The project consists of samples from the announcer of street fighter, which is an audio source that even Kanye West has also sampled. The idea is simple: it is the audio of a street fighter fight between a Chinese and a Japanese fighter synthesized through music. The Chinese fighter is represented by the "erhu" solo, an instrument that originated in China. The Japanese fighter is represented by a typical Japanese synthesizer; thus, the project consists of elements of pop culture from two different cultures, making it transnational. The album art provided on Soundcloud is an image that I took at an art gallery for Takashi Murkami, a Japanese artist who is popular in both Asia and America. The art of Murkami has also been used by Kanye West for his album covers. Different types of media can leave the viewer with different emotions, and I chose music because I believe it is the way in which I could extract the most emotion or interest from the listener.
