REQUIRED MATERIALS

In addition to any laptop/computer device you may use for class, you will need to provide your own ideation, sketching, and prototyping materials such as, for example: journal/sketchbook, a range of papers, index cards and poster boards, a range of pencils and markers, and other craft materials. Additionally, this course may require participants to play a game and/or experiment with a digital tool that is not readily available for free. In these cases, every effort will be made by the professor to keep the cost very low (in the realm of an average mobile game/app).

COURSE WEBSITE

Readings, announcements, assignments, and other supplementary materials will be added to the course Google Drive and this Scalar course site. The students should upload all their required work to one or both of these platforms, as most appropriate on a case by case basis. Scalar is a free, open source authoring and publishing platform that’s designed to make it easy for authors to write long-form, born-digital scholarship online. It is an increasingly used tool in the field of digital humanities. Scalar enables users to assemble media from multiple sources and juxtapose them with their own writing in a variety of ways, with minimal technical expertise required. Students are expected to participate in this course online Scalar “book."
