Jack and Jill is a magazine aimed specifically at young children which was first published in 1938 and continues to be published today. These images are from multiple editions from 1967. The magazines include not only fictional stories and nonfiction reading passages, but also game boards and other interactive material. The magazine encouraged girls and boys to play with each other, and did not separate any of its material by gender. Rather than assuming the girls would follow the recipes and the boys would play with the race track game, the children’s interests superseded any gendered expectations for what they would want to play with. It also published letters that readers sent it, or articles about their lives and families. Girls could read about other children’s lives and interests from their own perspectives.
