Being Wronged

Broken Screen

In the story "Missing," the beginning of every chapter pans over to a screen of several broken pieces that resemble a particular location that the abducted girl had been.

According to SBS Director of Television and Online Content, Marshall Heald, "each scene is a beautiful, stylized landscape mosaic of photographs in the Adelaide Hills that the viewer must piece together to drive the story forward" (Knox). By creating a visual effect that highlights the idea of puzzle solving, the audience is able to mimic the perspective that the detective possesses when solving a case. Putting together loose clues to solve a mystery mirrors the same mechanics as solving a puzzle. The creators of "Missing" plays with this similarity and uses the broken screen layout to visually demonstrate that the detective's search for the abducted girl is much like putting pieces together until the puzzle reveals itself. By designing parts of the game in this format, the audience becomes more tied to the thoughts and thinking process of the detective, involving the reader with the story.
