Environmental Justice

Connections to Environmental Justice Movement

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill closely relates to the 4th of the 17 Principles of the Environmental Justice Movement:

Environmental Justice calls for universal protection from the nuclear testing, extraction, production and disposal of toxic/hazardous wastes and poisons and nuclear testing that threaten the fundamental right to clean air, land, water, and food.”

The RESTORE Act

Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourist Opportunities, and Revived Economies of the Gulf Coast States Act.
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill resulted in the creation of the RESTORE Act¹. This act allows funds to be used for "programs, projects, and activities that restore and protect the environment and economy of the Gulf Coast region¹." The committee in charge of these funds consists of the Governors of the five states that had been affected by the spill.
