A specialist in the Renaissance, he is the author of Christian Rite and Christian Drama in the Middle Ages and co-editor with Frank Warnke and Alex Preminger of The Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, both published in 1965. He also served as the editor of Studies in Philology. The author of numerous books and articles, as well as two poetry collections, Hardison left UNC to become the director of the Folger Shakespeare Library from 1969 to 1983. In 1984 he joined the faculty at Georgetown University, where he remained until his death in 1990.
