Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Early efforts were linked with UNC’s initiative to provide access to technology for faculty, staff and students, Beginning in fall 2000, The Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI), required first-year students to own a laptop computer running a Windows operating system, making instruction in and support for digital resources necessary and timely. In 2018, to keep pace with developments in digital pedagogy and digital writing, The Studio for Instructional Technology and English Studies (SITES) is reconfigured to become the Digital Literacy and Communications (DLC) Lab under the direction of Dr. Courtney Rivard. The DLC “serves as a hub for innovation in digital pedagogies by exploring strategies to teach digital writing through web development, social media, and games” (“About Us”). Its staff consists of ECL faculty members, graduate students, and undergraduate student interns.
