The Latina/o Cultures Speakers Series has brought over 100 scholars, creative writers, visual artists, performers, cultural activists, and change-makers to campus including such well-known figures as Afro Puerto Rican Miguel Algarín (founder of the Nuyorican Poets’ Café), Chicana writer Helena María Viramontes, Guatemalan US-based writer Arturo Arías, Cuban American writer Cristina García, Chicana writer Sandra Cisneros as well as Cherríe Moraga, and Afro Dominican American writer Loida Maritza Pérez. This speakers’ series connected and continues to connect UNC and North Carolina to the rest of the United States and beyond with respect to LatinX cultural productions, experiences, and histories.
