New Learning 8 (Heather)-Realtimeboard

This week I decided to use Realtimeboard.  It is a workspace that allows you to add pictures, notes, sticky notes, videos, media, or documents to the space.  It has a draw feature and allows you to keep the space as a board, or turn it into a slideshow, or use it as a simple mind map.  Your board can be made private or public, but must be made public in order to get the embed code.  You can invite collaborators with either view-only or editing capabilities; the comment feature and sticky notes are perfect for collaborating.

When it's time to add files/media to the board, you can do it with a URL, upload it, or screen capture a web page.  It was really  easy to use!  It has an autosave feature, which I love, but does not have an auto-spell check, which is a bummer.  There are character limits on stickies, so those have to be kept short.  If you attach a sticky to a picture or something, it gets a bit hard to move, but there are alignment tools to ensure everything lines up neatly.  Once you set the presentation diameters (for when it's in presentation mode), it is easy to accidentally work outside of them and create work that won't be in your presentation unless you reset the diameters, so caution there (set presentation diameters after you have completed ALL of your work).  When you want to share your board, you can save your file to googledrive, embed it, or export as a pdf/png, so it is easily transferrable.

With the free subscription, you can maintain up to 3 boards and still use most of the program's features.  Premium pay features include: unlimited boards, storage space, screenshare, video chat, and more.

All and all it was a fairly easy program that could take the place of presentation, mind map, and other visual collaborating tools all in one application.  It wasn't the most intuitive program to use, but it wasn't the hardest either, so I think that the many diverse capabilities makes it worth it.  I have not used prezi much and I wonder how they compare? What are the advantages and disadvantages to each as presentation software?

Here is a link to the tutorial.

Here is a screenshot of me playing with the tools in the workspace:
Here is my Realtimeboard in presentation mode:
Of interest: I noticed that after I embedded the board into Scalar, when I made changes in the application, they updated automatically in scalar as long as I refreshed the page; that's convenient!

Comment on Kim BR8-Animoto:  This looks like a cool tool and you did a great job with the video!  I can see how the 30 second cap would be a limiting factor, but you easily overcame that by making several videos.  I think the 30 seconds would be a great way to do attention-getters, or to sprinkle them throughout a lesson.  In fact, now that I'm thinking about it, if a 50 minute lecture had 3 of these sprinkled throughout, it would be a really great way to try to re-engage distracted students!

Comment on Shantal Week 8, New Learning 7-Scoopit: You did a much better job with Scoop.it than I did, since I had no idea how to create my own scoops without a URL.  Do you know if it is hard to add your own pictures as well?  I also did New Learning this week and I think that your notes are terrific!

Discussion of "New Learning 8 (Heather)-Realtimeboard"

NL 8 & Realtimeboard - thumbs up

I like the directional potential for the presentation feature, especially since these whiteboard simulations often cover a wide expanse, so having these rhetorically intentional navigational cues are really helpful to the readers!

Kevin's comments on Heather's Realtimeboard

I like all the features of Realtimeboard. It looks like it could be very useful in the classroom. I wish I could use it for my upcoming project, but since it's not completely free, I won't be able to use it for my classroom.
