Heather's Storify was the first time I've seen what this program can do, and it creates a great "story" of information told visually for the reader. I liked how everything was integrated right into Scalar, making it very accessible. The ability to pull video, text, and images together has a lot of value, especially today when more and more information is mediated by the image. I could envision an assignment for students where they would create this kind of story instead of just a plain wiki or blog.

Kim's Google Presentation included a lot more detail than my Mind Meister map did, which I liked. Some of these tools seem more geared toward brainstorming than presentations. I really liked all of the images that were present throughout the slideshow, and the word cloud at the end was a nice touch. The pattern I'm seeing is that the presentation software programs would probably be better suited for out of class work, and mapping programs like Mind Meister and Popplet might be better suited for in class collaborative learning.

Mind meister Map Comment (Heather)

I really like your Mind Meister Map. It appears to fulfill a similar function as Popplet. I think that it is improved in that you can embed it into scalar, and I assume, other programs. I wonder if it has the collaborative capacity that Popplet has? I'm interested in the concept of "productive diversity," and in particular, the "portfolio worker." I see it referenced in your Mind Meister Map and will have to look it up in the text. Thanks for Sharing!

MindMeister

My only :-( about MM is that:
1. forces hierarchy
2. cost

But I do love it; I've played in it for years.

Kim Comment NL 3 Mindmeister

I think you are right that mind-mapping tools seem to make sense for use within the classroom, particularly as a way for students or groups of students to make sense of readings and ensure they can pull out the main points. It also creates a great shorthand to go back to and look at later as visually organized notes.

Kevin Norris Comment Mike's Mindmeiser

The Mindmeiser map seems like an easy programm to use. It would be good to break up a paragraph or chapter, breaking it into a topic with supporting details. It seems like it could also be used as a prewrite for a writing project.
