This chapter built on the ideas from Miller-Cochran & Rodrigo’s SoTL article I read last week. With the comparison and contrasts of two different MOOCs, I could really see some of the challenges with navigating these sites, particularly with Duke’s lack of hierarchical/ intuitive structure of tabs. With Young’s suggestion about the importance of linking information throughout a platform, I couldn’t help but think of our Scalar page which does that so clearly.


I thought Young’s point about the assignment sheets was also a good one, but something that she didn’t really get into was the idea of using multimodality to support understanding/usability. I was reminded of Rankins-Robertson, Bourelle, Bourelle, & Fisher’s “Multimodal Instruction” article we read in week 7. I loved their use of videos to explain assignments. I think usability shouldn’t just focus on navigation, but also ways of getting information in more than one way or modality.
