Methodology
Methods:
1. Qualitative Study
- Access- Measure current knowledge of SMS spaces from all students in composition and rhetoric (not just CLASP students)-- Survey
- Context- To follow, survey how students use emoji's to communicate
- Use- Using the data, note the rhetorical practice of CLASP students (specifically which type of "topoi" they're using in their visual rhetorical practice). Record socially constructed use (in group/ out group)
2. Storytelling
- Visual Narrative- In an attempt to convey the intersections between "actual" and "virtual" students will reconstruct a common text in the form of emoji's
- Survey- The stories will be followed up by a survey in which students will answer a series of questions geared at rhetorical intention of emoji use
- Assessment- The survey will be assessed to evaluate deviating cultural interpretation of emoji use and specific rhetorical topoi persuasive practice.
- Implications- Based on the findings, pedagogical implications will be evaluated in direct consideration for multimodal projects and particular topoi rhetorical devices within the rhetoric generated by CLASP students.
