Perform and Empower: Memorializing Elma Ina Lewis

Visualization

The proposed memorial to Elma Lewis would consist of two components – a stone podium and a bronze plaque. The memorial would be located in Franklin Park, given the park's significance to Lewis, and its public appeal and accessibility. A visual depiction of the proposed memorial is shown from several perspectives in the images below. This visualization was created by the author using SketchUp.

The bronze plaque would be centered on the podium’s lectern and describe the story of Elma Lewis and her accomplishments in relief.

The stone podium would, on the one hand, entice viewers to approach and read the plaque itself. On the other hand, the podium would present an opportunity for interaction and performance on the part of the visitor. This suggested memorial would connect with Elma Lewis’ passion for performance and her desire to empower others. Community members and visitors alike would be encouraged to use the podium as a site for activism, sharing, and exhibition.
