Program Goal H
To master this program goal, there must be an understanding of integrated library systems, information retrieval, computer networks, cloud technologies, data management. Additionally, there should be demonstrated practice of assessing the emerging technologies and their application and implementation in the library and other information settings. An Information Professional must demonstrate they understand how technology affects service delivery of resources. An information professional must also know how to evaluate technologies, develop requirements, select appropriate software/systems, and have practice implementing these technologies in libraries (Holmes-Wong, 2020).
I demonstrated competency in this program goal during LIM562: Library and Information Technologies. In this course, I led a team of four to assess and plan the implementation of Scalar for the Arts and Humanities Initiative, Visions and Voices. We wrote an analysis and recommendation on Scalar, an open-source publishing platform that’s designed to make it easy for authors to write long-form scholarship, exhibits, and presentations online. We identified that due to the Covid Pandemic, Visions and Voices was limited in their ability to perform program outreach, engagement, and accessibility of their programming and events to the community. My team and I were tasked with writing a proposal for implementing the Scalar platform to upload and manage their content and to propose a marketing plan for their new service. In our proposal, we included a problem statement, problem description, goals and milestones. We also included scope, benefits, and risks to the proposal. Additionally, we wrote up an implementation plan and budget for the project that included startup costs and a five-year forecast operating cost for Scalar. We broke down what the project needed to succeed by building a team with a librarian, a library assistant, a business analyst, an IT lead, a programmer, an extra Library assistant, and a social media coordinator. We broke down the completed project into tasks and estimated the time it would take for each task and determined how much it would cost for each team member to complete their tasks among the time they were still managing their own responsibilities outside of this project. With this deep dive, my team and I built a budget with estimated costs and a timeline of how long it would take to complete the project. This assignment exposed me to the task of planning a detailed implementation project within an information environment. This assignment helped me gain competency in this program goal as I show an understanding of Scalar, an emerging technology. I also identified how implementing Scalar could help the service delivery of Visions and Voices content.
I also demonstrated my competency in this program goal during LIM591D: Research and Professional Applications. In this course, we had to complete a research project which I chose to write it on Net Neutrality and how it affects society. For this research project, I described what the Internet is described network protocols that enable data packets to travel from one point to another through the Internet. I also described Internet Service Providers (ISP) and how they work to grant their customers Internet access. I performed a deep dive into the legislative history of Net Neutrality dating back to the Communications Act of 1934 to the present day and discuss how the classification of the Internet is at the core of the debate of how it should be regulated. Next, I discuss the multi-faceted sides of the Net Neutrality debate and how legislation can affect Internet access for regular consumers, public libraries, and even widen the gap between the digital divide. I conclude the paper by recommending the Internet be classified properly so it is regulated fairly and reasonably by the correct government agency. I also state that in order to regulate the Internet fairly, there needs to be a technological understanding of networks, a legal perspective that further analyzes both sides of the debate, and a thorough economic analysis that will document the benefits and of a reasonable pricing strategy and future network infrastructure investment. This assignment shows my competency in this program goal as I was able to discuss network infrastructure to understand a serious problem that can affect a user’s ability to access the Internet. The research project on net neutrality demonstrates my competency in this program goal, as I show my understanding of the Internet and its infrastructure, I describe the Internet’s organizational effectiveness and recommend improvements for its service delivery.
The assignments I worked on prove my mastery of this program goal as I learned different organizational technologies and how to implement them in an information environment. The Visions and Voices proposal demonstrates my understanding of Scalar, an emerging technology, and its infrastructure. I also identified how implementing Scalar could help the service delivery of Visions and Voices content to its users. Additionally, in my research project on net neutrality, I demonstrated my knowledge of the Internet and I described in great detail how net neutrality affects the Internet service and how it is delivered to its users.
