Program Goal G
This program goal includes assessing current programs and services within an organization. Additionally, this program goal requires knowing concepts and issues related to the lifecycle of recorded knowledge and information. In other words, you must identify information, and identify how related technologies affect the service delivery of resources. Furthermore, you must demonstrate the application of emerging technologies in information environments. (Holmes-Wong, 2020). This program goal is important for information professionals to be able to continue their mission of providing information and related services to patrons. One of the five laws of Library Science is that the library is a living organism, meaning it will evolve with time. It is our job as information professionals to evolve with the library. We should be regularly assessing our services and ensuring they are still fulfilling their purpose of assisting users to gain access to information and content.
I demonstrated my competency in this program goal during LIM591: Research and Professional Applications. During this class, I wrote a business case with an executive summary, a description of a current problem in the workplace, and two different solutions. Additionally, I was to give a recommendation and a rationale for the solution I supported. In the business case, I discussed the problem of a daily influx of mail and boxes cluttering the front desk at an Amazon corporate office. Besides the mail and boxes cluttering the desk, there were reported instances of lost or misplaced packages and mail. In my business case, I proposed building a Business Service Center (BSC) in the Amazon building to move all the boxes to a different space and to help organize the mail for the Amazon employees. I further discuss in my business case how building a BSC would be beneficial as it would help create a chain of custody of the mail and boxes to mitigate any unwanted costs of lost items. I also wrote an environmental analysis of the Amazon environment and provided two different solutions to the problem. Moreover, I discussed risks, benefits, and assumptions of the project, a budget with costs, and a funding plan. The business case assignment demonstrates my competency in this program goal as I identified information relevant to the problem at the front desk and discussed it in the environmental analysis. Lastly, I recommended a solution that would affect the service delivery of resources. In this case, the proposed solution would improve the service delivery of mail to Amazon employees.
Another assignment that helped me gain competency in this program goal was during LIM562: Library and Information Technologies. During this course, I led a team of four people on a project to assess the technology needs of the Arts and Humanities Initiative at USC, Visions, and Voices. Visions and Voices features events such as performances, presentations, and guest speakers with the purpose of encouraging USC students, faculty, and the surrounding community to engage with the Arts. Visions and Voices was looking for a solution to present their events in a digital format for their users. This assignment required the team to write an Environmental Scan and Needs Assessment about Visions and Voices. We were also required to build a SWOT analysis of the prospective program, Scalar, and include a budget of the implementation with a five-year forecast. As a team, we researched Visions and Voices and completed a needs assessment. We also analyzed who the stakeholders of the project would be and created a project timeline with recommendations of how to move forward with the project. Lastly, we created a detailed budget with a five-year forecast on how much it would cost to build and implement Visions and Voices content into Scalar. This assignment demonstrates my competency of this program goal as I assessed the needs of the organization and compiled an environmental scan on Scalar and its capabilities. Furthermore, I developed a budget to implement Scalar so Visions and Voices can provide their events and exhibits to the community.
Mastering this program goal requires developing, implementing, and assessing programs and services for enhancing the use of information and ideas. I demonstrate my mastery of this program goal in my past assignments. First, I wrote a business case where I identified information relevant to the problem at the front desk and I recommended a solution that would affect the service delivery of the mail. Lastly, I assessed the capabilities of Scalar and wrote an implementation plan and budget to enhance the delivery of Visions and Voices content.
