The story is told together

Instead of the learning being directly from grandmother to granddaughter, the active voice of the young woman starts the tale. The floating of "[h]er soft rich voice" lights the path into "the warm light atmosphere of her grandfather's youth" (128). The gendered binary is undermined here as well since it becomes a matter of balance between light and dark, between the cold night and the warm dreamscape.
