Defining the child even as she is a "maid of twenty summers"

The focal point of this tale is an internal audience--the grandmother's 20-year old granddaughter. Though such a woman does not meet the more standard definition of a child, I refer back to the key terms page in calling for an understanding of child(ren) as the youth who carry on their nation's values. In this way, the child is more about reproductive futures rather than the actual physical presence of children perse.
