As a civil rights activist, Sharon Daniel effectively creates an interactive documentaries in which anybody can explore public institutions such as the prison industrial complex in her work, Public Secrets. On the main menu, Daniels provides insight into the title and the interactive testimonials the user will hear or read. The curator states, "There are secrets that are kept form the public and then there are 'public secrets' - secrets that the public chooses to keep safe from itself, like, 'don't ask, don't tell.' The public secret is an aporia - an irresolvable internal contradiction between inside and outside, power and knowledge" (Daniel). This excerpt from the introduction presents a brief overview of the work and the author's intentions when creating it. As a piece, Public Secrets is an excellent example of electronic literature with the intent of the readers to explore beyond the screen.
