Janney Knuckle Coupler

A Janney knuckle coupler is a mechanism used to connect individual cars in a train.  A Type E coupler, invented in 1873, has a larger knuckle and greater slack and is used for hopper cars, flat cars, and box cars.  A Type F coupler, also invented in 1873, has a higher tensile strength and is used on tank and coal cars.

These were invented and patented by Eli Hamilton Janney, a dry goods salesman from Alexandria, Virginia.
