Archives in Context: Teachable Topics from the CSU Japanese American Digitization Project

Courts: Activity 5

Compare and contrast the WWII Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 with the al-Qaeda terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center in New York on 9/11/2001 with a special emphasis on the people whose civil rights were violated. Guiding Questions:

What similarities and differences can you identify between the two events and the subsequent actions taken by the U.S. government?
Which ethnic group experienced a widespread public response and xenophobia as a result of 9/11 and how did it compare to the Japanese American experience of WWII?
Discuss any recent examples of civil rights violations during times of stress and the American people’s response (George Floyd, Immigration bans, detention camps at the U.S. border, etc.).
What do you think might be the most effective route to take to resolve civil rights violations in today’s world?
