Archives in Context: Teachable Topics from the CSU Japanese American Digitization Project

Courts: Activity 2

Examine the U.S. Bill of Rights with the students in the classroom. Have the group discuss the meaning of the articles and which amendments were likely violated during WWII with the curfew and mass removal of the people of Japanese descent from the west coast. (Recommend a close look at amendments I, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII.)

Guiding Questions

Which rights were violated in the case of Mitsuye Endo?
Which rights were violated in the cases of Yasui, Korematsu, and Hirabayashi?
How might a U.S. citizen’s rights change during times of war?
What do you think about this now that you have read the U.S. Bill of Rights?
Is it appropriate for the government to limit citizens’ right during time of war or other crises?
