J. Hector St. Jean de Crevecoeur's "Letters from an American Farmer"

The Troubles

This is a footnote that is original to the 1783 edition of Letters. Here, "the troubles" refer to the American Revolution. Given that this footnote states that the American Revolution "had not broke out when this and some of the following letters were written," and given that Letter III references an event that took place in 1774, we can assume that Letters is most likely set in America from 1775 to 1776. Later Letters, in particular Letter XII, will reflect the chaotic turmoil of early revolution.
