J. Hector St. Jean de Crevecoeur's "Letters from an American Farmer"

Slavery in the Northern Colonies

James's discussion of slavery in the North vs. the South reflects popular assumptions about slave treatment in colonial America, more specifically about the difference between "domestic slaves" (who were often responsible for cooking, cleaning, and caring for white children) and "field slaves" (who endured physical labor in tobacco and cotton fields). "Domestic slaves" (more common in the industrial North) were generally thought to be treated better than "field slaves" (more common in the agricultural South), but nonetheless slaves in the North were still subject to poor working conditions, the fear of being sold and separated from family, and physical and mental abuse. This Medford Historical Society & Museum website offers more information on slavery in the North, specifically New England.
