J. Hector St. Jean de Crevecoeur's "Letters from an American Farmer"

Reading Question

"What then is the American, this new man?"

This is one of the most famous lines in the book and, one might argue, is the central question the twelve Letters attempt to address. How does James describe "the American, this new man" here? What qualities does he possess? How is he different than the European? As you read further, does James's vision of "the American" remain consistent throughout the Letters, or does it change? If so, how?
