Hector St. Jean de Crèvecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer. Dr. Mary Balkun and I began the project with the hope of making this important early American text more accessible to our college and graduate-level students. The text has been carefully transcribed by hand from the 1783 London printing of the text by Thomas Davies, and limited emendations have been made where appropriate (and listed as such on a separate page).
We have started with what we see as the most seminal Letters: Letter I, Letter, II, Letter III, Letter IV, Letter IX, and Letter XII. These Letters are at various stages of completion. All but Letters II and IV have been emended. Letters I, III, and IX have been fully annotated. Currently, Seton Hall University graduate students Sanna Fogt, Daniel Cymbala, and Anne Pino are assisting with annotations for Letters II, IV, and XII, respectively.
We hope eventually to complete the entire text and welcome any suggestions and feedback. Below you will find links to our websites with contact information.
