J. Hector St. Jean de Crevecoeur's "Letters from an American Farmer"

Captivity Narratives

Here, James tells the story of a twelve-year-old boy who is captured by Indians on the frontier and sold to a gentleman, who then legally "binds" him as an apprentice to a tailor.

Stories of men and women captured and sold by American Indians were not uncommon in colonial America; one of the most famous Indian captivity narratives was the Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson originally published in 1682.
