Botany and the Enlightenment

Here, James connects men to plants, and he continues this metaphor throughout much of Letter III. Botany became an important focus of the Enlightenment. The development of exploration and trade in the 18th century gave Europeans more access to new and varied plants; in addition, a renewed interest in science and reason generated interest in studying and categorizing plant matter. Carl Linnaeus was one of the most important natural scientists of the 18th century, particularly famous for his development of taxonomy, the classification of living organisms.
