Cragmor Sanatorium

City of Sunshine

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Colorado became home to thousands of people looking for the cure to consumption. Colorado Springs, known as the "City of Sunshine", became home to many suffering from consumption because of the high altitude, cleanliness of the air and supposed healing qualities of the mineral springs located in Manitou, CO. It was believed that the dry climate, reduction of oxygen in the air, and the thinness of the air contributed to curing and treating the illness. Colorado Springs was home to multiple Tuberculosis hospitals known as sanatoriums. There were 10 well known sanatoriums in the Colorado Springs area, those include:

1. Bethel Sanatorium

2. Cragmor Sanatorium

3. Glockner Sanatorium

4. Modern Woodmen of America

5. Montcalm Sanatorium

6. Nob Hill and Idlewood Sanatorium

7. Nordrach Ranch Sanatorium

8. St. Francis Hospital

9. Sunnyrest Sanatorium

10. Union Printers Home

For the sake of this research project, we will be focusing solely on that of Cragmor Sanatorium.
