Cuban Comics in the Castro Era

Heroes and Anti-Heroes

Cuban comics utilized satire to roast many of the people and policies that were in contradiction to the Castro government, but were careful to positively portray their leaders and other figures deemed heroic or that espoused the socialistic ideals of the government. Cuban heroes were portrayed as adventurous, brave, and most importantly, of the people.

Heroes:

Fidel Castro: Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was a Cuban communist revolutionary leader who later became the Prime Minster and later President of Cuba.
Che Guevara: Ernesto "Che" Guevara was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary leader who fought along Castro.
Simón Bolívar: Bolívar, the Liberator, was a Venezuelan military and political leader who led the secession of what are currently the states of Venezuela, Bolivia, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and Panama, from the Spanish Empire.
Julio Antonio Mella: Mella co-founded the Cuban Communist Party in 1925. He was later assassinated in Mexico under murky circumstances

Yuri Gagarin: Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was a Soviet Air Forces pilot and cosmonaut who became the first human to journey into outer space and completed one Earth Orbit in 1961.
Martí Pérez: José Julián Martí Pérez was a Cuban writer who is considered a national hero. He is considered an important revolutionary philosopher and political theorist.
Alejo Carpentier: Alejo Carpentier y Valmont was a Cuban novelist, essayist, and musicologist who greatly influenced Latin American literature during its famous "boom" period.
Máximo Gómez: Máximo Gómez y Báez was a Major General in Cuba's Ten Years' War against Spain and also military commander in that country's War of Independence.
Raúl Castro: Raúl Modesto Castro Ruz is a Cuban politician who succeeded as president after his brother Fidel Castro in April 2011.

Nikita Khrushchev: Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev was a Soviet statesman and Premier from 1958 to 1964.


Anti-Heroes:

Dwight D. Eisenhower: Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower served as the 34th president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. He was president when Castro's revolutionary army took control of Cuba.
John Kennedy:  John Fitzgerald Kennedy was an American politician who served as the 35th president of the United States from January 1961 until his assassination in November 1963. The failed Bay of Pigs operation was approved by him.
Fulgencio Batista: Fulgencio Batista y Zaldívar was the elected President of Cuba from 1940 to 1944, and its military dictator from 1952 to 1959, before being overthrown during the Cuban Revolution.
