The Editors
Eric Gordon
Director, Emerson Engagement Lab; Associate Professor, Department of Visual and Media Arts, Emerson College; Faculty Affilate, Berkman Center for Internet and Society, Harvard University
Eric studies civic media and public engagement within the US and the developing world. He is specifically interested in the application of games and play in these contexts. In addition to being a researcher, he is also the designer of award winning “engagement games,” which are games that facilitate civic participation. He has served as an expert advisor for the UN Development Program, the International Red Cross / Red Crescent, the World Bank, as well as municipal governments throughout the United States. In addition to articles and chapters on games, digital media, urbanism and civic engagement, he is the author of two books: Net Locality: Why Location Matters in a Networked World (Blackwell 2011, with Adriana de Souza e Silva) and The Urban Spectator: American Concept Cities From Kodak to Google (Dartmouth 2010). His edited volume (with Paul Mihailidis) entitled Civic Media: Technology, Design, Practice will be published by MIT Press in 2016. He received his Ph.D. in 2003 from the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.
Paul Mihailidis

Paul’s research focuses on the nexus of media, learning, and engagement in civic life. He has written and spoken extensively on the need for digital and media literacies as core constructs in the lives of young people. His new book, Media Literacy and the Emerging Citizen, outline effective practices for participatory citizenship and civic voices in digital culture. He is also the Editor of News Literacy: Global Perspectives for the Newsroom and the Classroom, and co-editor of Media Literacy Education in Action. Paul also directs the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change, a network of young media makers from around the world who work collaboratively to build civic projects for global and social change.

Roma Dash
Research Assistant, Emerson Engagement Lab
Roma is a Research Assistant at Engagement Lab and an Assistant Editor of Journal of Media Literacy Education (JMLE). She holds an MBA in finance, has past experience as a Financial Analyst, and is currently working towards a master’s degree in publishing & writing from Emerson College. Roma is also a fiction editor at Words Apart, a social justice magazine. Her research interests include international finance, LGBT+ issues, civic media, and immigration literature.
Becky Michelson
Project Manager, Emerson Engagement Lab
Becky coordinates research projects on playful civics and media literacy. Becky graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Cultural Anthropology. She was a Jeremiah Fellow with Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice where she practiced community organizing skills. Her interests include civic innovation, transmedia storytelling, and ethics with technology.
Marissa Koors

Marissa Koors works and writes in the intersection of critical theory and games studies, theorizing and developing an inhabitable criticism wherein players can discover, explore, and challenge existing power structures through gameplay. Her latest activities include speaking at QUEUC 2014, Re: Humanities 2014, and HASTAC 2015, an internship at the MIT Press, and a research assistantship at the Engagement Game Lab. She is currently working as an Associate Acquisitions Editor for Artech House Publishers while applying to graduate programs.

Aidan O'Donohue
Art Director, Emerson Engagement Lab
Aidan graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in painting, and has also studied design and architecture. In addition to her work at the lab, she works as an illustrator and teaches art to children with special needs. She splits her time between Boston and NYC and still loves to draw. Acknowledgements
The Civic Media Project is fundamentally collaborative. It is the result of the hard work of the contributors and the tireless effort from all those people behind the scenes. In addition to the editorial staff at the Engagement Lab, there were many students that spent their time reading, formatting and editing the case studies over the last several months.
