Conservation & Reforestation

Chiquita's farms are located in Latin America which is home to many rainforests and wildlife. The company takes extra measures to protect the land and animals where they farm. They go above and beyond to ensure that they are producing the best quality of bananas while having the smallest impact on the environment as possible. Some of the tactics that they take in order to promote conservation and reforestation, taken from the Chiquita website:

  • Protecting or reforesting along watercourses to create wildlife corridors and avoids erosion.
  • Planting tree “screens” to help to keep agrichemicals where they need to be and away from people.
  • Forbidding any deforestation to protect natural habitats.
  • Reforesting any land not used for banana production to eliminate soil erosion.
  • Using native species to maintain the local ecosystem.
  • Protecting existing forests and natural ecosystems (wetlands, lagoons, etc.) to preserve resources.
  • Prohibiting hunting and fishing in many areas to protect rare species.
  • Recycling to help minimize waste while using fewer natural resources.
