Changing Landscapes: From "The ASU Story" to Modern A-State

Social Landscapes

About the Project
The changes brought about by the Civil Rights movement transformed A-State's social landscape, beginning with the integration of African American students and faculty.  As student populations across the country became more diverse, more colleges began examining practices and language that had been taken for granted in previous years, leading to the elimination of mascots perpetuating cultural stereotypes. Here the national controversy over A-State's "Indians" nickname is particularly illustrative.  A growing international student population also brought new cultures to both the campus and the city.
